Our experienced engineers can recover data from a RAID array as long as the data itself has not been completely overwritten and enough of the drives in the array are still readable. We work with specialised software and hardware and with a class 100 clean room workbench to solve problems caused by file system damage or hardware failures.
A complete recovery is only possible if the minimum number of drives required for the RAID level is available. If file structures are badly damaged, or too many drives are unreadable (for example after a head crash) or overwritten, a full recovery is often no longer possible.

Why is data lost on RAID arrays?
Because a RAID consists of several drives, its problems are often complex. Recovery is usually possible, but only if it is done professionally. Running check disk, a rebuild, re-initialisation or re-creation of the array often makes the problem much worse and can cause irreversible damage.
Typical hardware causes are the failure of one or more drives, a failed RAID controller or backplane, and fire or water damage.
Typical logical problems include:
- controller errors, initialisation errors and configuration errors,
- unreadable sectors on a drive of the array,
- accidental re-initialisation of the array,
- drives inserted in the wrong order,
- formatting, deletion or reinstallation of the operating system.
Data recovery process
Be vigilant and do not attempt to salvage the data on the device yourself. This can make recovery impossible.
How we recover data from a RAID
RAID recovery is done with dedicated software and hardware tools. The content of the original drives is never changed.
Typical cases are:
- recovery after more than one drive has failed in a RAID 1 or RAID 5,
- recovery after one or more drives have failed in a RAID 0,
- recovery after a controller failure,
- recovery after logical damage caused by errors, controller malfunction or user mistakes.
First we create a sector-by-sector image of every drive. Then the array is rebuilt virtually in software. No data is written to the original drives at any point.
Data recovery from storage media from all manufacturers
All orders are processed exclusively in our Berlin laboratory. The data recovery from mechanically defective hard drives takes place within a dust-free environment of our clean room workbench of clean room class 100.
Frequently asked questions about RAID data recovery
In principle, yes. In a RAID 0 the data is split evenly across the drives, so every drive is needed. If one drive cannot be read at all, a complete recovery is not possible.
A complete recovery of a RAID 5 needs all drives except one (for example 3 of 4). From a single drive only small fragments of files can be recovered.
A rebuild writes to the drives. If it is started with the wrong drive or on a damaged array, existing data can be overwritten. Do not start a rebuild before your data is safe.
A RAID provides speed and redundancy, not protection against deletion, malware or controller faults. A backup is a separate copy on another storage device.
The diagnosis is free of charge. A standard recovery costs 357–535.50 euros, a special recovery (for example mechanical damage that needs spare parts) 476–897 euros plus any spare parts. If no data can be recovered, you pay nothing for the recovery. Details: Prices. For RAID systems the price is calculated per defective drive.
